Question: serving

My friend told me that she eats more than 5 servings of fruits and vegetables a day. What's a serving?

Answer:

Dear Kate,

A serving of fruits or vegetables is equal to about ½ cup or about the size of ½ a tennis ball. One medium apple, 6 baby carrots, 4 large strawberries, 1 small banana, 16 grapes, and ½ a grapefruit are all about 1 serving. For leafy veggies like spinach and lettuce, 1 cup counts as a serving and for dried fruit like raisins, ¼ a cup (a small box) counts as a serving.

You need to eat about 9 servings of fruits and vegetables every day. It sounds like a lot, but eating all of your fruits and vegetables is not difficult! Make smoothies, soups, eat dried fruit in the car or the bus and eat fruits and veggies as snacks and for dessert. Before you know it, you will have eaten all of your servings!

Question: fruits

Do I really need to eat 5 fruits a day?

Answer:

Dear Robin,

Eating fruits and vegetables is very important for all of us! Fruits and veggies give our bodies many important nutrients, and they also contain fiber (which helps slow down digestion and lower the risk for obesity, diabetes, cancer and other dangerous diseases). Make sure you get your 5 a day—but don’t panic. The portion size is actually about the size of a medium apple!  It’s easy to eat your 5 a day. You can eat a banana with your cereal, an apple as a snack, or make your own smoothie with pineapple and strawberries. Munch on a few carrots and eat your broccoli at dinner. Make sure you eat a rainbow: choose different colors of fruits and vegetables, like orange, green and yellow. Enjoy your eating!
